NASCAR has shown that they are their own worst enemy yet again. They have no consistency whatsoever in their interpretation or enforcement of their own rules. This was never more apparent than this past weekend at Watkins Glen.
Robby Gordon was hit with a penalty during the prior week at a Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen. This resulted from his blatantly out of line behavior during the race as he instigated with David Stremme. More recently, Gordon stirred up some more trouble with Joey Lagano at this week’s past race at Watkins Glen. Gordon’s antics forced a nasty crash on Lagano’s part, yet nothing was called against Gordon for his actions.
Yes, I know the Pocono incident was during the Cup race and the Glen incident was Nationwide, but aggressive driving is aggressive driving and the penalty has been issued in both series many times. What is a mystery is how NASCAR officials could watch the on-track actions of Robby Gordon and just see them as a “racing” deal. This was one of the most blatant cases of aggressive driving with the sole intention of wrecking a driver I have seen in quite some time.
The fact that Robby intentionally forced Logano off the track right after a car had spun and the field in that area was under a local caution, which resulted in Logano’s car suffering enough damage that it caught fire and his day was done, should have been enough to put Mr. Gordon behind the wall for the day, but no, he was allowed to continue.
NASCAR has been vocal in its opposition of confrontations like these, and has taken action in the past. For some reason, there’s a very obvious incidence of inconsistency here, as there’s no reason in the world that Gordon should walk away from this unscathed.
You could never have seen a NASCAR race in your life, and had you seen the race from the week before, you’d have known that Gordon’s actions were very obviously done on purpose. These actions seriously put the safety of Lagano at risk, as his car literally caught fire.
Even if penalties are issued at a later time that doesn’t float with this race fan. The actions of Robby Gordon put every driver in the area in danger yet were ignored by race officials. The fact that another driver was sent head on into a barrier due to intentional actions meant to “send a message” should have resulted in Robby being removed from the track for the remainder of the race at minimum.
The lack of sportsmanship and class shown by Robby Gordon were disgusting and reprehensible to say the least but for NASCAR to ignore the on track actions and allow him to continue to place driver’s well being at risk is simply mind numbing.
